
Washington (CMRT) - Madagascar 2 managed to own the North American box office over the weekend.
The latest Dreamworks release Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa raked in a very impressive $63.5 million in its opening three-day weekend.
Tihs tops the original filim’s debut which was at $47.2 million back in 2005, and also surpassed all studio estimated.
Madagascar 2 is the best opening of the year for a family film. It managed to beat out some hefty competition such as Wall-E from Disney, as well as Kung Fu Panda.
Wall-E opened taking in $63 million while Kung Fu Panda took in $60 million.
Coming in second was Role Models which opened taking in $19.2 million, followed by High School Musical 3 in third with $9.3 million.
Rounding out the top five were Changeling and Zack and Miri Make A Porno.
